A CHALLENGE FOR INNOVATIVE STUDENTS IN CHEMISTRY & ENERGY
Sustainable energy challenge for Texel
Wednesday 15th of November was the second edition of the student challenge as part of the Topsector Chemistry Graduation and Granting event. During the day four teams of students from various talent programs (Topsector Energy, Topsector Chemistry, COAST, VNCI, NWO and PTTP)
participated in a challenge about sustainable energy for the island of Texel. This year the 18 top students were are asked to determine and pitch the technical and economical feasibility of the power-to-ammonia concept for the island of Texel. An expert jury consisting of representatives from the chemistry- and energy sector evaluated the contributions and selected the winning team.
Power to ammonia concept
Ammonia is a well known chemical commodity and feed stock for fertilizers. Furthermore it is a good candidate for a large-scale, low-carbon, energy carrier of the future. New value chains based involving Power-to-ammonia can provide the flexibility required in the future with an increased share of intermittent renewable energy, facilitating the energy transition for the Netherlands to meet its greenhouse gas emission target for 2020.
